You are looking for a turnkey (or almost), scalable solution that will quickly deliver satisfaction without requiring heavy investments in infrastructure or IT teams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-mo-introduction-font-size\">You have heard about SAP and its Cloud ERP in SaaS (Software As A Service) <strong>S\/4 HANA Cloud<\/strong>, and your search has led you to my article. I will therefore try to help you structure your approach and share our project experience so that yours is a success! <\/p>\n<h2>1. But what exactly is S\/4 HANA Cloud?<\/h2>\n<p>S\/4 HANA Cloud is a Cloud ERP in SaaS (Software As A Service). It is a complete suite: application and technical, 100% online, offering a subscription-based consumption model, easily scalable, and benefiting from constant technological monitoring. <\/p>\n<p><strong>It is a technical foundation with 3 main components:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SAP FIORI:<\/strong> The core of the SAP user experience, offering native Web and Mobile access to a streamlined, responsive, and personalized interface based on our role in the company<\/li>\n<li><strong>S\/4 HANA Cloud:<\/strong> The application engine of the ERP that manages functional processes and includes real-time reporting (&#8216;Embedded Analytics&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)<\/strong>: An integration platform, with the SAP and external ecosystem, and an extension platform, to enable the development of specific applications to meet your organization&#8217;s unique needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meltone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Figure-1-Principaux-composants-300x151-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48741\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 1. Main components of an S\/4 HANA Cloud implementation <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It is possible to add other applications from the SAP ecosystem (SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), SAP Ariba, Concur, SAP Successfactors, SAP Hybris, &#8230;) or third-party applications, thanks to the integration capability of the SAP Business Technology Platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is an application layer serving the Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\/4 HANA Cloud highlights the concept of &#8216;Best Practice Business Processes&#8217;: standardized, optimized, and simplified processes, the result of expertise acquired in the various sectors where SAP is present.<\/p>\n<p>Through these, S\/4 HANA Cloud addresses different lines of business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>finance<\/strong> backbone with very comprehensive coverage of controlling, accounting and regulatory compliance, procurement and sales processes, and the supply chain<\/li>\n<li>A component for <strong>manufacturing<\/strong>, addressing planning and monitoring issues, product lifecycle, as well as quality management and HSE (Environment, Health, Safety)<\/li>\n<li>A vertical for <strong>professional services<\/strong> enabling the management of project-oriented activities: project lifecycle, fixed-price or time-and-materials billing, resource and time tracking, project margin management, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meltone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Image2-300x229-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48758\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 2. S\/4 HANA Cloud &#8216;Best Practices&#8217; themes <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Business Technology Platform<\/strong> (BTP) is a cloud-hosted PaaS (Platform As A Service) whose primary objective is the integration, centralization, and management of data. In addition, there are 3 services that allow this data to be best utilized: <strong>It is a connection to a larger ecosystem thanks to BTP:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Analytics:<\/strong> Benefit from SAP&#8217;s Cloud data warehouse, the BW\/4HANA database, and the analytics functionalities of <strong>SAP Analytics Cloud<\/strong> or SAP BusinessObject BI to create precise and innovative business intelligence reporting, or <strong>SAP Business Planning and Consolidation<\/strong> for collaborative planning and budgeting,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development and integration applications:<\/strong> Enrich the core by connecting external applications (standardized inbound and outbound API catalog made available) and by creating applications to manage specific use cases and practices for your context,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intelligent technologies<\/strong>: Automate processes via RPA (Robotic Process Automation), leverage data through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, collect it with IoT (Internet of Things).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Organizations are increasingly transitioning to the &#8216;Cloud + SaaS&#8217; model, integrating specialized solutions by line of business, each with its own environment and ecosystem. This increases the risk of fragmentation of their application landscape. It is in this context that BTP finds its meaning and positions itself as a central and standardized platform allowing all fragments to be brought together and promoting data sharing between different applications without introducing technical complexity in terms of interfacing, integration, and landscape maintenance.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meltone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Figure-3-la-BTP-300x210-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48747\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 3. The SAP Business Technology Platform, gateway for applications <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Two consumption modes for the S\/4 HANA Cloud suite:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The publisher offers two consumption modes for its S\/4 HANA Cloud suite:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The &#8216;Public&#8217; Cloud<\/strong>: The database, infrastructure, and software are 100% administered by SAP and shared by all &#8216;Public&#8217; Cloud customers. Configurations, extensibility frameworks, maintenance, and updates are therefore entirely conditioned by the publisher&#8217;s roadmap and schedule. To date, the &#8216;Public&#8217; Cloud offers very comprehensive basic coverage for financial, production, procurement, and sales activities, professional services, and project management. <\/li>\n<li><strong>The &#8216;Private&#8217; Cloud<\/strong>: In this mode, the database and infrastructure are dedicated to your organization, hence the term &#8216;Private&#8217; Cloud. As a result, you benefit from greater functional coverage, customization flexibility, and control than in the &#8216;Public&#8217; Cloud: more business sectors covered as standard, increased functional depth, and the choice of whether or not to apply an update. However, this mode will be more expensive, especially since it requires an additional subscription from the hyperscaler of your choice (Google, Azure, AWS, Alibaba, &#8230;) for cloud hosting.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will find the term SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud associated with this consumption mode. This refers only to the naming of the infrastructure service (Infrastructure As A Service \u2013 IAAS) allowing the use of S\/4HANA on a &#8216;private&#8217; cloud. <\/p>\n<p>The choice of consumption mode is structural and must be rooted in a global operational and IT strategy: what is the ambition for growth, internationalization, and business diversification? What scope should the ERP address? What is the desire for homogenization and simplification of processes? What is the teams&#8217; appetite for adopting new ways of working? What is the IT strategy for Cloudification and human, software, and hardware investments?    <\/p>\n<p>We advise our clients to conduct a preliminary study to answer these major questions to ensure that the choice will correctly meet their organization&#8217;s challenges and needs.<\/p>\n<h2>2. How is S\/4 HANA Cloud implemented?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>With a methodology developed by SAP guaranteeing accelerated implementation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The implementation of S\/4 HANA Cloud follows the <strong>SAP Activate<\/strong> methodology, an &#8216;Agile&#8217;-oriented methodology where the publisher is a stakeholder in its project execution.<\/p>\n<p>It consists of 5 phases, each with its objectives and a systematic review involving all stakeholders (SAP vocabulary = Q-Gate):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Prepare<\/strong> phase: Project scoping, selection of &#8216;Best Practices&#8217;, definition of structuring principles (architecture, project breakdown, migration and testing strategies)<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Explore<\/strong> phase: Team integration, discovery of the solution&#8217;s pre-packaging, preparation of the configuration, and identification of necessary change management<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Realize<\/strong> phase: Configuration, data migration, and demonstrations of the configured solution. This phase should be carried out using an agile method, with prototyping favoring rapid validation or adaptation of pre-packaged processes. <\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Deploy<\/strong> phase: Testing, training, migration, and go-live<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Run<\/strong> phase: Transfer of responsibilities, post Go-Live support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meltone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Figure-4-Methodo-Activate-300x133-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48738\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 5. Project lifecycle according to SAP Activate <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Process diagrams<\/strong> describe the operation and steps of each &#8216;Best Practice&#8217;, thus facilitating the adoption of the tool by business teams. It will be necessary to activate accelerators proposed by SAP during each of these phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>pre-configured system<\/strong> is made available from the beginning of an implementation to allow for demonstrations and its adaptation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Configuration questionnaires<\/strong> structure the expression of business needs, guiding the step-by-step adaptation of the solution, via the <strong>configuration reference document \u2013 SSCUI<\/strong> and the construction of application integration (i.e., interfaces), using <strong>the API repository<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Test scripts<\/strong> are available to structure user acceptance testing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Template documents for backlog tracking<\/strong> of requests are also provided<\/li>\n<li>To secure team integration and training, you will need to rely on <strong>My Learning Hub<\/strong> and <strong>Learning Center<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By applying our field-acquired advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our experience and S\/4 HANA Cloud projects have allowed us to identify a number of essential accelerators and facilitators for a successful implementation. I have broken them down by project phase below. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Prepare Phase:<\/strong> Secure the scope and project phasing<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Articulate sprints<\/strong> (SAP Activate = agile methodology) <strong>around &#8216;Best Practices&#8217;<\/strong>: this ensures the completeness of the scope covered and its logical sequence in relation to business issues<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan a sprint 0<\/strong>: We recommend a preparatory sprint to anchor the solution&#8217;s structuring principles: organizational structure, chart of accounts, list of interfaces, &#8230; this facilitates the articulation of subsequent sprints and avoids questioning during them<\/li>\n<li>Anticipate the <strong>technical activations of &#8216;Best Practices&#8217; and country versions<\/strong>: these being done by the publisher, a delay for consideration in project plans must be taken into account (1 to a few days depending on the request)<\/li>\n<li>Take into account the <strong>publisher&#8217;s updates<\/strong> (quarterly releases) in the schedules: they will incur workload (non-regression tests) and block transports between environments for 2 weeks, which is significant in an &#8216;accelerated&#8217; project plan<\/li>\n<li>Create a dedicated domain in the project plan for <strong>change management<\/strong>: the success of a Cloud project lies in the adoption of the solution. Therefore, <strong>change management<\/strong> must start as early as possible: assessment of resistance to change, definition of a change strategy, preparation of a communication plan, skill development and training trajectory, creation of ambassadors within the internal organization (&#8216;Champions&#8217;) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Explore Phase:<\/strong> Pace the solution design and ensure its adoption<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prioritize <strong>the standard<\/strong>: The strength of a Cloud solution lies in its standard. This is based on best practices in business sectors and facilitates scalability and implementation. It is therefore necessary to avoid diverging from it at the risk of complicating the solution and extending the implementation time   <\/li>\n<li>Create an <strong>arbitration instance<\/strong>: Sticking to the tool&#8217;s standard will generate discrepancies with current practices. The adoption of action plans or workarounds is therefore essential at all levels of the organization (change management!). <\/li>\n<li>Force <strong>ownership of topics<\/strong>: To strengthen change management, we set up a meeting instance, called &#8216;Design Review&#8217;, where we involve the organization&#8217;s internal functional and IT teams in the restitution of defined processes and architectural principles, in animating follow-ups and decision-making. This promotes collaboration and client ownership of the solution <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Realize Phase:<\/strong> Create a dynamic of creation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep realization and deployment <strong>sprints<\/strong> <strong>short and paced<\/strong>: Produce results quickly and maintain momentum<\/li>\n<li>Take into account the <strong>international dimension<\/strong>: The configuration of the cloud solution is done by localization (country version). It is therefore not possible to work on several countries at the same time. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deploy<\/strong> <strong>Phase<\/strong> <strong>:<\/strong> Utilize the tools offered by the suite<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good <strong>anticipation of data migration<\/strong>: Review the objects to be migrated upstream, as well as their new coverage level and operational needs. The migration cockpit provided in the tool is excellent support for this activity. <\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>Enable Now<\/strong>, SAP&#8217;s E-learning solution, to complement change management and user training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RUN<\/strong> <strong>Phase<\/strong>: Plan for change<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>positive approach to version upgrades<\/strong>: anticipate updates, be positive and communicate on the value created, and ensure business benefits as quickly as possible<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>coherent deployment plan<\/strong>: organize coherent deployment scopes to continue leveraging accelerators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3. <strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cloud ERP solutions like <strong>S\/4 HANA Cloud<\/strong> are disrupting the ERP world. They require a change in mindset (adherence to a standard), greater business and IT flexibility, and new methodologies, but offer significant value in terms of cost, efficiency, and scalability: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They require no infrastructure investment but offer services in the form of subscriptions<\/li>\n<li>They have shorter configuration and deployment times<\/li>\n<li>Their adoption by end-users is simpler, thanks to Web accessibility<\/li>\n<li>As showcases of publishers&#8217; service expertise, innovations are regular and value propositions strong<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-platinium-background-color has-background\">Are you looking for information and advice on <strong>S\/4 HANA Cloud<\/strong>?
