Tereos centralizes market risk management with Anaplan
How has the One Position project transformed Tereos’ price risk management and financial performance?
Tereos and the project in figures
Tereos: a cooperative group exposed to market volatility
Tereos is a leading French agricultural cooperative. It brings together over 15,000 employees across some thirty industrial sites worldwide. The group is among the global leaders in its markets, notably as the second-largest global producer of sugar and starch, through its brands La Perruche and Béghin-Say.
Tereos is also one of the largest buyers of grain and gas in France, and one of the leading ethanol marketers. However, all these products are listed on financial markets. Managing the price volatility of these raw materials is therefore a major strategic challenge for the group’s financial performance.
Fragmented and unscalable price risk management
Before the launch of the One Position project, market risk exposure management relied on a culture that Yohann Ollivier, Financial Director of trading activities, himself describes as “druidic.” Lots of Excel, manual entries, and oral communication, without real traceability or centralized consolidation.
In a context of high market volatility, this operating model quickly reached its limits. Reports could not be updated at the required frequency. Teams (sales, management controllers, traders, industrial controllers) lacked shared indicators to monitor their exposure and performance in near real-time.
The project’s objectives were therefore clear:
-
Centralize market risk exposure monitoring on a single repository.
-
Digitize data sources and automate their consolidation.
-
Transition from weekly reporting to daily performance monitoring.
-
Empower each stakeholder with actionable and understandable indicators in euros.
-
Strengthen data governance and the reliability of figures produced.
The One Position project: Anaplan at the heart of the risk management system
To address these challenges, Tereos launched the One Position project with a clear dual objective: centralize the group’s risk position and equip the associated performance measurement. The chosen solution is Anaplan, already present in the Tereos ecosystem, which facilitated integration with existing systems.
Why Anaplan for market risk management?
The choice of Anaplan was therefore compelling for several structural reasons:
- Native integration with existing information systems (Salesforce, SAP, other Anaplan modules).
- Specific development capabilities to model market finance-specific management rules.
- Connectivity with Business Intelligence tools to enhance the analytical nature of reports.
- A collaborative platform fostering coordination between business teams.
MeltOne: rare business expertise in market finance
MeltOne supported Tereos throughout the project, from the framing phase to Application Maintenance (TMA). The MeltOne project team structured project governance with standard instances — dailies, workshops, steering committees — and quickly integrated the specificities of price risk management.
This rapid upskilling on complex market finance topics was therefore a key success factor, praised by the client itself. The responsiveness of the teams during the TMA phase — essential for handling incidents before market positions are recorded — was also decisive.
“The MeltOne team quickly adapted and acquired the business knowledge specific to market risk management. These are rare and sometimes complex skills that the teams quickly managed to grasp.”
Concrete benefits for Tereos’ financial and operational performance
Deployed across three business units and five raw materials, the One Position project yielded tangible results from its implementation.
Next step for Tereos: aligning market position and rolling forecast
Building on these initial results, Tereos is already looking ahead. The next challenge will be to align the One Position performance with rolling forecasts, to ensure the consistency of management models across the entire financial cycle. An EPM-Data convergence that illustrates the group’s ongoing transformation logic.
Key takeaways
The One Position project at Tereos illustrates how a connected EPM solution — Anaplan — can profoundly transform the market risk management of an industrial group exposed to raw material price volatility. Three words summarize the project, according to Yohann Ollivier himself: collaboration, communication, agility.
