The challenges of fragmented financial management

SNCF Gares & Connexions brings together 5,000 employees and 20,000 service providers. Before Pigment, three challenges hindered the company’s financial management.

  • An overly heavy production workload

Management controllers spent most of their time producing financial data. As a result, they lacked the availability to support operational teams.
  • Reliability to be strengthened

Financial information needed to become more reliable. This was a necessary condition to support management decisions at group level.
  • Siloed budget construction, without cross-entity visibility.

Finance teams lacked autonomy over their own data. They often depended on third-party tools or teams to produce their analyses.

Testimonial from the SNCF Gares & Connexions team

“The challenge of implementing EPM for Gares et Connexions was to free up useful time for management controllers who, until then, produced a great deal of financial data, so they could reallocate their time to supporting operational teams and creating value.”

A two-phase rollout

The program ran for around two years, in two sub-programs. The first covered the multi-year investment plan, CAPEX tracking, and P&L. The second, carried out over the last nine months, focused on the budget preparation process, via two applications.

MeltOne delivered two workstreams. First, project management, with weekly and monthly tracking. Second, building the applications, co-developed with the finance teams.

Tangible results: the creation of the Reporting Factory

Before Pigment, the application landscape was siloed: one process, one tool, one administration team. Today, everything is integrated into a single tool, internally named Link, administered by the Reporting Factory.

Certified data

All financial data now comes exclusively from Pigment and the Reporting Factory. It is therefore single-source and standardized across the finance function.

A schedule met

Seven processes were successfully deployed. The original schedule was met with no overruns, despite a demanding scope.

Key takeaways:

The Reporting Factory team is now trained to administer the tool independently, both functionally and technically.

  • Seven financial processes unified

    In a single tool: Pigment.
  • Certified and standardized financial data

    Across the entire finance function.
  • Time reallocated to management controllers

    To support operational teams.
  • A project delivered on time

    Despite a very specific scope.

For finance departments facing a fragmented application landscape, this case study is particularly insightful. Successful centralization depends as much on the tool as on change management support.
