Useful data answers a precise question

Data and sports performance go hand in hand, even on the water. Clément Bourgeois, a high-level IQ Foil athlete, is aiming for a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. To achieve this, MeltOne developed a custom data application with him. It analyzes his starts, training sessions, and competitors. This case study was presented at the “From Data to Medal” conference.
In 2022, Clément had one of his best seasons, reaching the world top 5 and securing podium finishes. He wanted to analyze these results to replicate or even surpass them. However, he had no accessible data or simple tools at the time.
Three key challenges emerged from his project:
Clément was looking for a sponsor whose core business was data. MeltOne is a French consulting and integration firm. The project therefore aligned with its sporting DNA. Furthermore, Clément’s engineering background facilitated the development.
The project unfolded in five stages:
“I came with my specifications, with my experience. […] Then, with a team within MeltOne, we managed to develop this tool. It was quite complex because sailing and windsurfing, in general, are not well known. However, the data expertise and the implementation of dashboards, all these debriefings, were extremely fast.”
First, the application is used for training in World and European Cups. Clément then worked on his starts for four months. During the last World Championship, he achieved one of the fleet’s best days. This applied to both the first and last days. These days included six-minute slaloms.
After three to four hours on the water, the athlete needs to recover, eat, and sleep. Therefore, he doesn’t have time to explore the data. He envisions a chatbot connected to his database to get leads for work in less than an hour.
It reveals weaknesses, such as a delayed start. This allows the athlete to work on them during training.
It uses GPS, competitor tracking, and heart rate curves. Additionally, it automatically segments the races.
Clément wanted a personalized application that was quick to evolve and controlled. Generic tools did not allow for this.
Yes. The framework is universal: data comes in, questions arise, and data provides answers. MeltOne can therefore reuse this foundation.
MeltOne developed the application with a dedicated team. It then evolves it throughout competitions.
